Worried by the incessant pipeline vandalism in Ughelli and its environs, Delta State, some indigenes of Ughelli under the aegis of Natives of Ughelli Kingdom, have accused the contractors in charge of pipeline surveillance for OML 30 and 34 of complicity in the crime.
The group in a petition to the Delta State governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, urged him to prevail on the management of Nigeria Petroleum Development Company, NPDC, and Shoreline Natural Resources Ltd., to revoke all pipeline surveillance contracts awarded to the present set of contractors.
The petition by the group’s president and secretary, Daniel Awisa and Felix Olokpa, explained that they were ready to work with the state government to ensure that pipeline vandalism was brought to an end in the area.
The group while attributing pipeline vandalism in the area to a cold war between the contractors and the community noted that the failure of the contractors to include the locals in their operations as well as the failure to pay staff were the reasons pipeline vandalism in the area had persisted.
Meanwhile, the Ovie of Ughelli Kingdom, HRM Oharisi III, has urged security agencies in the area to come together to put an end to vandalism of government property, including oil pipelines.
Lamenting the effect of vandalism, the monarch at his palace, yesterday, noted that aside the negative effect of the scourge, residents of the various communities affected, suffer huge losses in their farm produce as a result of environmental damage from the activities of vandalism.
