Gunmen suspected to be sea pirates on Wednesday abducted a soldier and two community chiefs in Bayelsa State.
The three victims were kidnapped at Kiberibo area of the Ogbia-Brass waterway, Nembe Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
Although the name of the soldier who was said to be in mufti was not disclosed, the two community leaders were identified as Blessing Wagio and Isaac Akono-Igolo,
an uncle of the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State council, Tarinyo Akono.
Former Chief Librarian of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Jigekuma Ombu-Kieri, who was a passenger on one of the boats involved in the skirmish, escaped by the whiskers.
Witnesses said the boats had left Ogbia waterfront in Ogbia Local Government Area at about 2pm, heading for Brass Local Government Area, when they were attacked.
Another passenger who also escaped the attack, one Mrs. Arum, said that she saw a man lying face-down in the pirates’ speedboat when they were being dispossessed of their valuables.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, said he was waiting for details of the attack at press time
