The police on Monday arraigned an 81-year-old hunter, Orija Joseph in an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for allegedly killing his colleague by accident.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Oriyomi Akinwale, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Aug.12 at Imesi-Ekiti, in Gbonyin Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
He told the court that the accused gun shot on Aug.12 killed one Ismala yusuf, while on a group hunting at Ilepa farm in Imesi-Ekiti.
According to him, the offence contravened Section 325 of the Criminal Code, Cap C 16,Laws of Ekiti State.2012.
The plea of the accused was not taken, but defence counsel, Mr Busuyi Ayorinde, prayed the court to consider the age of the accused and grant him bail.
He said that the incident was a case of accidental discharge.
Ayorinde told the court that the deceased family had agreed to out of court settlement, as they considered the incident as a family affair.
He also assured that the accused would not jump bail.
Magistrate Taiwo Akosile, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said one of the sureties must be a relative of the deceased, and the other, a landlord in the accused home town.
She adjourned the case till Aug. 26 for further hearing.
