The State Health Commissioner, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju after leading a raid on some pharmaceutical stores in Akure said government will not fold its arms and watch the people consume fake drugs.
It would be recalled that the state government worried by the menace of fake and counterfeit drugs, last year inaugurated a Task Force as well as procured the Tru-drug scan machine capable on detecting fake drugs on the spot.
The first port of call for the Task Force was the Pharmacy Department of the State Specialist Hospital where the team certified that all drugs that were dispensed were original and certified by relevant regulatory agencies.
The team them moved to Mak Owoeye and Welfast Pharmacies along Hospital Road where the drugs passed the Tru-drug scan test.
However at Tesy Patent Medicine Store also along the Hospital Road, the team was forced to seal up the shop because some of the drugs failed the Tru-drug scan test, in addition to seeing injectibles without authorisation.
Speaking after the exercise, the State Health Commisioner, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju said government has done so much in providing qualitative healthcare for the people viz-a-viz programmes and policies, facilities, and manpower and would not allow this to be undermined by circulation of fake drugs.
Dr Adeyanju said the raid on pharmaceutical stores is therefore to get rid of the fake and adulterated drugs as well as end all sharp practices by the sellers.
He assured merchants of fake drugs that it won’t be business as usual as Task Force would move round the State and anyone found culpable will face the wrath of the law.
Adeyanju was corroborated by the State Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr Wole Ojo who noted that in addition to having their shops sealed up, owners would be sanctioned in line with extant laws.
